Central Asia-based Somon Air recently became the first carrier in the region to operate the Boeing 737 Sky Interior aircraft. The event also marked the first direct purchase of a 737 on the part of Somon Air, which thus far has only acted through intermediaries.

The Tajikistan-based carrier seeks to improve its compliance with international safety standards, while at the same time providing increased levels of comfort to customers choosing it over competitors.

Together with the US Department of State Humanitarian Program and Project HOPE, Somon Air used the new aircraft to deliver 2,852 pounds (1,293 kilograms) of medical supplies to Dushanbe, the country's capital city. The flight was also a part of Boeing's Humanitarian Delivery Flights program.

These supplies will be used to care for the poor and underprivileged of Tajikistan. At this time, the country simply does not have the tools necessary to handle infectious diseases. It also lacks medication for psychiatric or oncologic issues.
