Bodhi, a minimalistic Linux operating system based on Ubuntu and that has really low requirements, has reached version 3.0.0 RC1.

The Bodhi Linux systems are known for their minimalistic approach, and the current release is no different. The devs have made the switch to Ubuntu 14.04 LTS as a base stating with this branch, and this decision is already showing in the development.

It's interesting to note that the development cycle for Bodhi Linux started before Ubuntu 14.04 LTS reached stable status, and this means that the devs of this particular OS have been at it for quite some time. Ubuntu 14.04 LTS was released on April 17, a couple of months ago.

“At Bodhi we work firmly on a ‘its ready when its ready schedule’ as opposed to sticking to our set release goals and churning out something we are not happy with. Better late than never as the saying goes! Just ten days after the targeted release date I am happy to share our first Release Candidate for Bodhi Linux's third major release.”

“The most important new thing in this release is the addition of an ISO image that supports legacy hardware. The legacy ISO image features a 3.2 kernel that will work on 486 machines (or newer), including non-PAE hardware. This ISO image currently features the same E19 desktop that the other three discs have, but if all goes as planned the legacy disc will feature the E17 desktop by default starting with our second release candidate,” said the developers in official announcement.

According to the changelog, there are still a number of problems that haven't been solved yet. For example, the quick start guide opens twice on the live CD/the first time you boot Bodhi, an Enlightenment segfault occurs the first time users access the menu on the live CD, and the App Center does not work.

As usual, if you already have the operating system installed you don't have start everything from scratch. It's possible to use the eepDater software to get the update for the latest version. Unfortunately, 64-bit users of Bodhi will need to follow a few instructions in order to make the update process work.

A complete list of changes can be found in the official announcement. You can download Bodhi 3.0.0 RC1 right now from Softpedia.

Remember that this is a development version and it should NOT be installed on production machines. It is intended for testing purposes only.
