Pope Francis has put out a statement addressing the tragic life loss near the island of Lampedusa, in Italy today.

94 people have died and 250 others are still missing as a boat transporting African migrants has sunk.

Pope Francis expresses feeling "great pain [for the] many victims of the latest tragic shipwreck today off Lampedusa."

According to the Guardian, he has visited the island this summer. His speech on the Lampedusa wreck has been included in the news report above.

The Pope stresses that the world should feel shame over the Lampedusa disaster.

"The word that comes to mind is 'shame.' [...] Let us unite our strengths so that such tragedies never happen again," he says during a speech held at the Vatican earlier today.
