If you haven't seen the final episode in the “Boardwalk Empire” period drama, now would be a good time to stop reading this article because it's going to be full of spoilers. If you've seen it already and have come to terms with the shocking deaths, then read on.

Terence Winter, one of the show's creators for HBO, has opened up about the shocking way in which the series ended over the weekend. As you might have seen, in the last few minutes of the episode, Joe Harper (Travis Tope) is revealed to be Tommy Darmody, and moments later he shoots down Nucky Thompson (Steve Buscemi), the main character, in front of a crowd.

Winter claims that the ending was chosen from a list of several other possibilities after he sat down with the show's creative team. “We came to that conclusion around the middle of season four,” he said in an interview with TV Line about Nucky's death.

“We had been batting around various possibilities, and we talked about how keeping Nucky alive might be a worse punishment for him - living a life of obscurity for a guy like him might be a horrible thing,” Winter mentioned but then added that they felt to have Nucky dying at the hands of Jimmy's son was a much satisfying ending in their view.

What do you think? Was the ending the one you had in mind, or did you think Nucky was going to live?
