Users want ClearType to work in the Modern UI too

The Modern UI which debuted together with Windows 8 in late 2012 was heavily criticized by PC users in the first months on the market, but as time passed by, more people actually discovered its benefits and became addicted to some apps running in this new touch-optimized environment.

Now some people love the Modern UI so much that they want some traditional Windows features, such as the Control Panel, to move entirely in the touch interface, thus making all settings available from a single location, no matter the device that they're using.

But another problem affecting modern Windows users right now is related to blurry fonts, as many people complained in the past that fonts looked terrible on their computers.

While on older Windows versions the blurry fonts affected Windows and Internet Explorer on the desktop, it appears that some users are now having the same problems in the Modern UI.

Make ClearType work in Metro too

At this point, one of the feedback requests to make fonts less blurry in the Modern UI has received nearly 4,000 votes on the Windows UserVoice channel, which is an indication that many people actually think the same and want Windows Store apps to look better on their devices.

Making ClearType work in the touch-optimized environment could be a way to fix this, some users say, as Universal Apps look very bad no matter the screen dimensions.

We haven't experienced this kind of behavior on Windows 8.1 and Windows 10 until now, but judging by the amount of feedback, there's no doubt that Microsoft must investigate reports as soon as possible.

One user explained that Microsoft could also look at rival platforms to find ways to improve fonts in modern versions of Windows.

“This problem can be solved for ever if they adopt the rendering technology used in other platforms like Linux and OS X!. I can't forget the days where I used to use Safari for Windows just because of the font crispness I enjoyed inside of Safari ONLY under Windows,” he posted.

Fortunately, Microsoft still has enough time to look into all these reports until Windows 10 comes to the market, but it's a well-known fact that blurry fonts have been around since Windows 7 no matter how many workarounds users actually found in the meantime.

At this point, Windows 10 is still in development phase, so a lot could change until the operating system hits the market. We'll keep an eye on this feedback thread and will update the article when new information is provided.
