If the name Chelyabinsk sounds familiar, this is because, in early 2013, this city in Russia was hit by a meteorite

Just days ago, people living in the city of Chelyabinsk in Russia woke up to find that, while they were sleeping, odd-looking blue snow fell from the sky without warning and covered their corner of world.

As shown in the images in the gallery below, the snow came in different shades of blue and covered not just streets but also buildings and cars. There were even blue icicles hanging around.

If the name Chelyabinsk sounds familiar, this is because, a couple of years ago, this part of Russia got hit by a meteorite that exploded above it with the force of 30 Hiroshima bombs. Apparently, folks in this part of Russia just can't catch a break.

Pretty much everyone freaked out when they saw the blue snow

Not at all surprisingly, Chelyabinsk's residents were not exactly overjoyed to see blue snow towering over their home city. Long story short, they pretty much freaked out when they first set eyes on it.

Daily Mail tells us that, when they came face to face with the blue snow, people almost immediately assumed that it was toxic. Hence, they did their best to avoid coming into contact with it.

“As the sun rose today, everyone notices the blue rooftops, blue parking lots,” local resident Dmitry Kudryonok told the press in an interview. “We started panicking a bit,” he added.

Word has it that, of the people who did touch it, some ended up having a sore throat. However, there were no cases of people who needed medical attention after, say, building a blue snowman.

A likely explanation for the blue snow that fell over Chelyabinsk

This is yet to be confirmed, but there are some reports saying that the city of Chelyabinsk in Russia ended up buried under this thick layer of blue snow following an accident at a local factory.

More precisely, it is said that the factory in question, which produces dyes for Easter eggs, had a little mishap and spilled some chemicals into its surroundings. These chemicals eventually got mixed with the snow and turned it blue.

The good news is that, for the time being at least, there is no information that this Easter eggs colorant that spilled in Russia's Chelyabinsk region and that likely turned the local landscape blue could pose a threat to public health.
