The challenging RPG for the PS4 is a big success

The success of Bloodborne surprised Sony as even when factoring in the sales of previous titles made by From Software, such as Dark Souls 2, the PS4 exclusive achieved much more impressive sales figures across all territories.

Bloodborne launched back in March of this year and delivered a challenging role-playing experience, in the same vein as previous projects made by Japanese studio From Software, such as Demon's Souls, Dark Souls 1, or 2.

However, unlike those last titles, Bloodborne was exclusive to just a single platform, in the form of Sony's PS4, as the Japanese corporation acted as publisher and helped From Software with expertise from its own studios.

Sony is quite impressed with Bloodborne's success

As such, while Bloodborne wasn't expected to have the sales figures of a multi-platform game, Sony confirms that it surpassed all expectations and came away quite impressed with the role-playing experience.

According to PlayStation UK CEO Fergal Gara, who talks with MCV, there were pretty high expectations for Bloodborne ahead of its release, especially when the previous Souls titles had established a loyal fanbase for studio From Software.

In reality, all those expectations were surpassed as many different PS4 owners flocked to see if the exclusive RPG was something worthy of their time and money.

Gara also adds that Bloodborne benefitted of a perfect storm of conditions, seeing as how very few big titles launched in the first few months of 2015 and many PS4 owners were eager for something fresh to enjoy.

"It did surprise us. We had expectations to do well. We were being quite ambitious, but even that proved to be conservative. I think Bloodborne might have just landed just at the right time; it was a relatively quiet time, it was a very high quality title and a great platform differentiator for us. We were caught a little bit behind in terms of the volume, but we were able to chase it and maximize its potential."

As of right now, no new DLC has been confirmed for Bloodborne, so it's unclear just what new things Sony and From Software are cooking up.
