BloodRayne is a video game developed by Terminal Reality Inc. to be published by Majesco Sales and released in 2002, being launched for the Microsoft Xbox, the Sony PlayStation 2, the Mac and the PC. The game, which spawned a sequel, is classified as a hack and slash title sprinkled with some horror elements and played from a third person perspective.
The main character of the game is a female vampire called BloodRayne (the wordplay is very transparent) who has an insatiable thirst for blood and especially for the blood of her enemies who are mainly undead conjured up by way of experiment and Nazi troops.
BloodRayne has quite a wide arsenal that she can use to kill her enemies but one of the most effective tools is her blood drinking. As she drinks enough blood she can first enter a state called Bloodlust, which allows her faster movement and quicker kills. Drinking even more blood gets her into Bloodrage. As the player advances deeper into the game the abilities of the heroine increase exponentially. She gains super speed, better vision and more acute senses, quicker reflexes and even the ability to slow down the flow of time. As the game progresses the main weapons of the character, which are silver blades attached to her hands, can be upgraded and other weapons, mostly firearms, can also be used.
The game is noted by critics for the over the top use of violence and sexual content meant to drive sales.
