Blogger Shows the ‘Truth’ Behind Apple’s Retail Stores

A disgruntled Apple retail staffer’s blog contradicts almost everything the Cupertino giant aims to promote about its retail organization, while also suggesting that working at Apple retail stores is not exactly a joy.

Some believe common sense is all you need to tell that Apple’s promo materials are a tad exaggerated. The person behind CrApple Store (reader discression is advised), however, is making sure even a blind person can see the “real truth” behind Apple’s retail stores.

“It began with a list of reasons why working for Apple Retail is [expletive], and just spiralled out of control. I couldn't keep it inside anymore, and so have decided to share the hate with the rest of the world,” the person responsible for CrApple Store writes.

Take, for instance, a more recent CrApple Store post that talks about service part packaging.

“Looks like the Apple isn't getting any greener, so says Greenpeace anyway, and so says me, 'cos I see it on a daily [expletive] basis,” writes the blogger, who obviously isn’t shy of cursing every once in a while.

“Apple are always gloating about how much smaller the packaging is for their products, but for service parts it's a whole different story. Take for example an Airport card, Apple insist on using a huge box where a matchbox would suffice.”

The blogger shows the image below as evidence (click to enlarge).

On the other hand, the company headquartered at 1 Infinite Loop, Cupertino, California says that "Five percent of Apple’s greenhouse gas emissions are a result of transporting our products from assembly locations to distribution hubs in regions where our products are sold."

Apple claims it "employs teams of design and engineering experts who develop product packaging that’s as small, light, and protective as possible. This kind of efficient packaging design not only reduces materials and waste, it also helps reduce the emissions produced during product transportation," the Mac maker states (emphasis ours).

According to Apple, the image below shows how this applies to MacBook shipping.

From the looks of the picture published by CrApple Store, it does seem like Apple wastes a lot of material on component packaging, yet the technical particularities of the Apple AirPort card may justify their decision. But we’re not here to take sides.

Needless to point out, CrApple Store is filled with negative posts on topics such as training and morale, internal staffer documentation, ongoing activities inside the Apple retail establishments, store meetings, staff discounts, the electronic equipment used for transactions and more.

CrApple Store even has a post on the company’s Senior Vice President of Retail Operations, Ron Johnson whom the dissatisfied blogger likes to call an “iPrick.”

“This is the guy responsible for all the stuff that goes on in Apple Retail,” he writes.

“If you're doing repairs until midnight, I'm pretty sure it's cos this guy hates your wife and your social life,” the blogger adds, showing a slightly modified picture of the Apple exec inside one of the company’s retail outlets.

“It's people like this that think they're the ones who have made Apple so much money, they honestly believe they know what goes on in stores,” he goes to say. “And I'm sick of his [expletive] voice, and face, in all those [expletive] videos you have to watch during the brainwashing sessions store meetings.”

Few people are this vocal matters concerning Apple, which makes us wonder: is this person simply being subjective, or is this the truth about Apple and its retail organization?

Of course working for a retail store is going to suck your soul out and you are going to see things that make you think "WTF?!" now and then. However at my local store which has been open for years and years now there are at least 10 employees that have been there for as long as I have been going. This means the experience can't be as bad everywhere as this person has experienced as their employee churn seems low. Also I worked two days there before I was offered a better paying job a couple years back. The training was not a brainwashing at all, allowed for multiple breaks to go out on the floor and do "real work" between sessions, and at the time I felt no pressure to force the up-sell on the customer. Not to bad for $10.25 / hr for products that could easily sell themselves.

Whether what he says is entirely true or not, he isn't helping his cause any. His blog is more anger-fueled, expletive filled rants and name calling than anything else. The "CrApple Store" makes me think that the author has as many problems with his attitude as the apple store has problems with its retail. From the way his blog reads, I don't think this person would be happy working anywhere.
