Blogger Is Back to Normal, Google Details the Outage

Blogger is up and running again after a couple of days of problems. What was scheduled to be a routine update turned sour and Blogger has had to revert to a backed-up version of the service. This also meant that all posts were reverted to the date of the backup.

Since then, Blogger has been restoring content posted after the failed update and the site was in read-only mode, meaning no one could publish anything, while the team worked on this.

All blog posts have now been restored, so people can start publishing again, but not all comments have been retrieved yet. Blogger hopes to do this over the weekend.

"What a frustrating day. We’re very sorry that you’ve been unable to publish to Blogger for the past 20.5 hours," Eddie Kessler, tech lead/manager at Blogger, wrote.

"We’re nearly back to normal — you can publish again, and in the coming hours posts and comments that were temporarily removed should be restored," he said.

"Thank you for your patience while we fix this situation. We use Blogger for our own blogs, so we’ve also felt your pain," he added.

Blogger detailed what happened, it's pretty much what it had already revealed. The site underwent a regular maintenance update on Wednesday. It's hardly an event, this type of update is quite common.

This time around though, things didn't go as they were supposed to and the update introduced a number of instabilities and problems for the users. These issues were widespread enough for Blogger to have to roll back the update altogether.

The underlying software but also all of the content was rolled back to a state saved on May 11 at 7:37 am PDT. Blogger then had to add all of the content posted since that date back to all of the blogs, which took time.
