Entertainment oriented retail chain Blockbuster has announced that all those who come into its stores in order to buy a copy of Gears of War 3, the latest third person shooter from developers Epic Games and publisher Microsoft, will be able to also get unlimited in-store rentals for both movies and other video games.

The offer is available until October 7, 2011 and is offered in all the more than 1,500 stores that Blockbuster has all over North America.

There are no restrictions placed on the movies and video games that Gears of War 3 buyers can rent and the company boasts that there are more than 100,000 titles available in its entertainment library.

Randall Baker, who is the Senior Buyer of Video Games working at Blockbuster, has stated, “We want to get back on gamers’ radars with a promo that packs a punch.”

He added, “Gears of War 3 is certainly one of the biggest games of the year, but players may want to take a breather from fighting alongside Delta Squad every now and then. We’re giving them nearly unlimited entertainment options for those spare minutes.”

Blockbuster has had a rather eventful history lately, filling for bankruptcy protection during September 2010.

It's new owner is the DISH Network Corporation.

The offer seems to be part of a bigger effort on the part of the company to persuade gamers and movie lovers to get back to using its stores.

Like all other major retail chains Blockbuster has been filling the pressure of the growing trend towards digital distribution of video games and movie streaming, with a lot of analysts blaming the bankruptcy protection on the chain's inability to compete with Netflix when it comes to movies and to specialized locations like GameStop in the video game space.

Gears of War 3 is available exclusively on the Xbox 360 from Microsoft.
