Since the first details about World of Warcraft’s next major patch 6.1 were published online, there have been lots of questions regarding a particular new feature that did not have any explanation attached next to it.

The so-called Veteran Edition account was listed among the new features and improvements included in patch 6.1, which is supposed to head to PTR soon.

While some speculated that Blizzard might be upping the level cap for Starter Edition accounts from 20 to 60, others even claimed World of Warcraft might go free-to-play with this Veteran Edition account.

And there’s some truth in the last statement, as Blizzard has just confirmed that the Veteran Edition account will be introduced for those who already have a subscription.

Currently, if you haven’t played World of Warcraft before and do not own an account, you are entitled to a Starter Edition account, which allows you to play the game for as long as you want with some limitations.

Players with lapsed WoW accounts will be able to play for free under the restrictions of a Starter Edition account

One of these limitations would be the level cap set to 20, the inability to join a guild and several others. However, this is enough for a new player to get an idea of what the game has to offer and whether or not it’s worth paying a monthly subscription.

However, if you already own a World of Warcraft account and your subscription has already expired, Blizzard won’t let you log into your account.

Well, with the Veteran Edition account you will be able to log in to World of Warcraft, but you will be limited with the same restrictions of the Starter Edition account.

There’s one exception though, as you will be able to join a guild with your sub-level 20 characters, if any of your other characters are still in that guild.

According to Blizzard, the Veteran Edition account is only an internal name, but it’s unlikely that the term will be used when patch 6.1 goes live.
