During an interview that focused on Rage of the Firelands, the upcoming patch for World of Warcraft, Blizzard's Greg Street revealed that everyone in the studio had an iOS device. The developers are looking at ways to port WoW to the iPad, but this is not going to happen too soon, Street said.
Also known as Ghostcrawler on the World of Warcraft forums, Greg Street sat down with Eurogamer to discuss MMO gaming.
At one point, the appeal of iOS devices within Blizzard became the topic of discussion.
"Everyone I know here has an iPhone or an iPad so we're huge fans of the hardware,” Street said.
Replying to a question about the possibility of seeing WoW on the App Store, Street added:
"If we could make the right game changes to make that work, it's something we'd be interested in. It's not something you're going to see in the next week or two, but it's the kind of thing we're always looking at."
In fact, WoW iOS is not just something that’s on their minds. According to Street, it’s “a really big topic” inside Blizzard.
“The one [issue] that comes to mind is that WOW is designed for use of a mouse and a keyboard and we haven't yet seen a console solution that lets us replicate it easily," he said.
Another roadblock is, of course, the actual development of the game itself:
"I suspect that we would also want to own a lot more of the back-end than most console companies would be willing to let us have. Right now we're being pretty successful just supporting the PC and Macintosh. We'd love to do it if it ever made sense - I'm sure we would," he concluded.
For those who don’t want to wait it out, there’s always
Order & Chaos Online by Gameloft, the most WoW-like game for the iPhone you’ll come by in the App Store.
