Diablo III continues to be very popular even more than one year after launch and it seems that the development team at Blizzard is already exploring other ways of keeping it popular in the long term, by including a ladder system.

Wyatt Cheng and Travis Day, producers working on Diablo III, stated via a stream quoted by diablo.somepage that, "Five years from now, you’re probably not going to see us making huge content patches, or class updates."

They added, "Ladders are absolutely one of the things that helps the game stay fresh for people 5 years from now, or 3 years, or 2 years, or whatever."

Blizzard says that a ladder would separate existing characters from those that are created specifically for it.

Diablo III is set to launch on the PlayStation 4 and the PS3 in the fall.
