The development team at Blizzard says that it sees the entire world of Diablo 3 as being one of low fantasy, driven by a focus on real materials and actions, opposed to the high fantasy present in the World of Warcraft MMO.

Aaron Gaines, a character design artist who is focusing on weapons, writes on the official site of the game that, “The main thing for me is to keep it in the realm of realistic, but still fantastical. We like to think of it as ‘low fantasy’, whereas something like WoW is more high fantasy. Identifiable materials, themes, and strong, iconic silhouettes are a must for our camera angle.”

He adds, “WoW has a very big, bulky, chunky design language that fits incredibly well in their world. For us, we need to be a bit more toned back, while keeping that epic Blizzard feel. It's a bit of a challenge, and I love doing it.”

At the moment, Blizzard is working on the Reaper of Souls expansion for Diablo 3, which is designed to add a new realm for gamers to explore, more enemies to battle and a range of new items to pick up and use.

The new Crusader class, with its unique skills and abilities, will also allow long-term fans to replay the original title once again.

The company is also making big changes to the crafting process and is shutting down the Auction House system.

Reaper of Souls will be offered in March on the PC and the PlayStation 3.

World of Warcraft is not being abandoned any time soon either and Blizzard is working on an entirely new expansion, which will allow players to visit the now destroyed world of Draenor and engage in complex alliance battles.

The new content was revealed late in 2013 and players will get access to it in 2015.
