The interest of the multiplayer battle arena fans has lately been linked to the Valve created Dota 2, which is being unveiled at Gamescom via a tournament with a big prize of 1 million dollars, and to the new expansion that is coming to League of Legends.

But the core concepts of the Defense of the Ancients like games were always linked to Warcraft III and to Blizzard, a company that has promised players its own spin on the concept in the form of a DOTA mod for Starcraft II.

Speaking during a panel at the Gamescom 2011 trade event Jonny Ebbert, who is a senior game designer working at Blizzard, has said that the company plans to launch Blizzard DOTA at some point near to the release date of the Heart of the Swarm expansion for its strategy game Starcraft II.

Ebbert has also suggested that more information on Blizzard DOTA will be launched during the BlizzCon event and that players might even get to play a version of it there.

The initial announcement about the mod has been made last year using the same venue.

The problem with linking Blizzard DOTA to the launch of Heart of the Swarm is that the expansion, as pretty much every other project that the developer is working on, does not have an official launch date.

A leaked schedule from the Chinese subsidiary of the company suggests that it might arrive during the summer of 2012.

Blizzard DOTA is set to use the well known heroes of Starcraft II to re-create the Defense of the Ancients experience, with a number of tweaks.

The developer has recently admitted that one of the big failures linked to Starcraft II has been its inability to quickly implement the promised mod powered marketplace.

Heart of the Swarm will focus on the adventures of Kerrigan and the Zerg.
