Blizzard has confirmed that the traditional BlizzCon gathering won’t be held this year, as the company wants to focus on its array of current projects, while holding just a smaller eSports competition in Asia.

BlizzCon has been going on for quite some time, with Blizzard showcasing the dedication of its community every year. Fans were also thrilled with the convention, as it allowed them to get in touch with all the projects currently in development at the studio, even if getting tickets to it was almost impossible.

Now, Blizzard has made an announcement about BlizzCon 2012 but, instead of confirming the period in which it will take place or anything like that, the company admitted that the next edition of the convention will actually take place in 2013.

Instead of the actual gathering, Blizzard fans will have to make do with the 2012 Battle.net World Championship, a global eSports competition that will see pro-gamers duke it out in Asia at the end of the year.

“Blizzard Entertainment is proud to announce the 2012 Battle.net World Championship, a major global eSports event featuring some of the best pro-gaming competition in the world. Slated to take place in Asia toward the end of 2012,the Battle.net World Championship will host this year’s StarCraft II and World of Warcraft Arena World Championship tournaments,” the company said in a statement.

“We’re excited to be showcasing Blizzard eSports on a truly global stage this year. We're also heavily focused on getting Diablo III, Mists of Pandaria, and Heart of the Swarm into players’ hands as soon as possible. In light of our jam-packed schedule, we’ve decided to hold the next BlizzCon in 2013.”

Blizzard did promise that it would release more information about the eSports world championship as well as BlizzCon 2013 in the following months.

Even so, you can expect quite a few members of the community to be upset about the cancelation of this year’s convention. Hopefully, this will mean that current Blizzard projects like Diablo III or Starcraft II: Heart of the Swarm will appear faster than usual.
