Sumatran orangutans recently hit a rather rough patch, as the expansion of human society has taken its toll on their natural habitats and the resources they need in order to survive.
However, on-going conservation projects are trying to keep this species from becoming extinct.
As part of these conservation project, a rather elderly orangutan mother got its eyesight restored just a few days back, which means that it can now have a first look at the babies it gave birth to only a while ago.
Whereas this female orangutan, named Gober, went blind because of advancing cataract, its mate, named Leuser, cannot see with either of its two eyes as a result of some human having shot it with an air rifle, causing it permanent damage.
According to sources
, one of the conservationists presently trying to safeguard Sumatran orangutans explained how, “Twin orangutan births are not unheard of. I have heard of some 10 to 15 cases in my career, but twins whose parents are both blind is totally unique.”
