She plays a rich, beautiful girl to whom no one can say no but, in real life, Blake Lively of the “Gossip Girl” fame has had it rough. Gracing the new cover of Vogue, the actress explains in a lengthy interview that she, unlike her Serena van der Woodsen character on the hit TV show, knows what it’s like to have people make fun of you.
“It was the only school where people were just downright mean to me.” Blake says of second grade in her private school. “They would make fun of my clothes. [Blake wore a lot of vintage stuff that came from her mother]. She just did that because she was so creative and because she didn’t want me to be dressed in big T-shirts cinched with a plastic clip like all the rest of the kids.” the actress reveals.
Although Lively often refers to her “fashion pedigree” as “sweatpants and Uggs,” she confesses that this was one incident that did not fail to mark her for life, especially as her mother’s exquisite taste always pushed her to want more from herself than just blend in with the crowd. This has come to be influenced even more by her part on the hit show, where she gets to pick lots of stuff from her character.
“Just being here, walking around, you pick it up really quickly. In New York, you put on skinny jeans and riding boots and a leather coat and handbag, and you take on that posture and character. It becomes very natural.” Blake tells Vogue. Speaking of Serena, the rich girl Blake plays on TV, it is probably very unlikely that “Gossip Girl” takes a hit from the international recession, as it has already happened with many productions in Tinseltown, the actress believes.
First and foremost, the show was created precisely to deflect reality and introduce the viewer into another world where they would not normally have access. With this in mind, why should the economic downturn affect its evolution? “We live in an alternate universe on the show; it’s a heightened reality. They created a show that people can watch after a long day and not have to stress and worry and feel the burdens of real life. It’s just an escape, watching these sparkly lives and just escaping into this other world for an hour.” Blake tells the magazine.
