Canadian mobile phone maker BlackBerry is reportedly working on a new smartphone that will pack a high-resolution screen; codenamed BlackBerry Windermere, it has just made an appearance online.

According to leaked photos that emerged on the CB Forums and which are said to depict a prototype version of the device, BlackBerry is building it as a new QWERTY-enabled phone, most probably with the BB10 operating system loaded on top.

The developer prototype reportedly features a 1440 x 1440 pixels touchscreen display, one that still boasts a 1:1 ratio, the same as the BlackBerry Q10 before it.

The smartphone is also said to include 3GB if RAM, making it more powerful than the current series of devices from the company. No info on its processor has been provided, but we expect it to be a more effective one as well.

As N4BB notes, BlackBerry Windermere is packing a new type of QWERTY keyboard, and the leaked photo with it suggests that too.

Apparently, the device will be released with three rows of keys instead of the usual four rows that most QWERTY handsets pack.

However, although this will be a physical keyboard, users will be able to swipe gestures on it, the same as they can do on the BlackBerry Z10 and Z30, which sport on-screen keyboards.

Another interesting tidbit about the mobile phone is the fact that its increased screen real estate could allow BlackBerry to include better multitasking capabilities, making it possible for two applications to be opened at the same time.

Moreover, rumor has it that BlackBerry might sign up a big partnership for the launch of this device. Should all go according to plan, the smartphone might move from the prototype stage in the not too distant future.

Unfortunately, no official confirmation of any of these has been provided as of now, so we’ll take the above with a grain of salt. Stay tuned for more on the matter.
