On Monday, mobile phone carrier Verizon Wireless announced plans to start rolling out Push to Talk for the BlackBerry Tour 9630 smartphone on its airwaves starting today, March 30. According to the wireless operator, the new feature will become available both for BlackBerry Internet Service and BlackBerry Enterprise Server customers who own such a device.

“Extending Push to Talk to the BlackBerry Tour from Verizon Wireless offers business customers a single device for instant communication plus the enterprise-grade security and robust business communications capabilities people have come to expect from a BlackBerry smartphone from Verizon Wireless,” said Mark Bartolomeo, vice president – Global Enterprise Marketing for Verizon Wireless. “These features, coupled with the nation’s most reliable wireless network, mean customers have the ultimate in productivity tools.”

Those Verizon Wireless customers willing to add Push to Talk to their service plans can do so online via the My Business Account or Verizon Enterprise Center, or by calling 1-800-VZW-4BIZ. BlackBerry Internet Service customers will have to call 1-800-2 JOIN IN or to visit the My Verizon site for that. As soon as they add Push to Talk to their plans, customers can download the application from the Application Center, and the convenience key on the left side of the device will become the Push to Talk button.

Among the benefits that Push to Talk offers to users, we can count: - Communicate with one person or a team with the push of a button - Initiate and participate in group calls with up to 50 participants - Check colleagues’ availability for a Push to Talk call with the Presence feature - A single device and phone number for both Push to Talk and voice calls - Online contact management tool for the entire organization

The wireless carrier already has a series of Push to Talk phones available for its users, including the CASIO G’zOne Rock, CASIO G’zOne Brigade, Samsung Convoy and Motorola Barrage. Owners of such devices can enjoy instant two-way communication, which is a great option for field workers, the carrier notes. Users activating a qualifying voice plan and BlackBerry data plan can benefit from the Push to Talk service for free in a 90-day promotion starting with March 30, Verizon added.
