Mobile phone carrier Verizon Wireless is expected to add a new BlackBerry smartphone to its offering in the coming weeks, namely the BlackBerry Torch 9850, the latest touch-enabled device from Canadian mobile phone maker Research In Motion.

The new device was already said to be on its way to Big Red in the not-too-distant future, but no specific info on when it might actually become available for acquisition has emerged until now.

However, recent reports on the matter suggest that Verizon would be gearing up for releasing the new phone as soon as September 8th via Direct Fulfillment (Web and phone sales).

Moreover, the wireless carrier is said to plan on making the new device available for purchase via its stores on September 15th. The BlackBerry Torch 9850 should hit other retail channels as well on this day, it seems.

For those out of the loop, we should note that the BlackBerry Torch 9850 is the CDMA flavor of the Torch 9860 smartphone, which was unveiled to the world only several weeks ago with the new BlackBerry 7 OS on board.

It is the successor of RIM's Storm handset, featuring a large 3.7-inch touchscreen display in a candybar form factor. The screen boasts a 480 x 800 pixel resolution.

The new mobile phone sports a fast 1.2GHz application processor inside, along with 768 MB of RAM, and 4 GB of built-in memory. The BlackBerry Torch 9850 also comes with a microSD memory card slot with support for up to 32GB of additional storage space.

The specifications list of the new handset also includes a 5-megapixel photo snapper that can deliver 720p HD video recording capabilities, as well as with WiFi and Bluetooth connectivity capabilities, and the usual set of sensors.

For the time being, no specific info on the price tag the device might feature at Verizon emerged. No official confirmation on the availability of BlackBerry Torch 9850 was spotted either, but Verizon might announce it soon, so stay tuned.
