Research in Motion announced last week the upcoming availability of the BlackBerry Torch 9810 slider in South Africa.

The smartphone has just hit shelves at Vodacom and is expected to go live at MTN Africa as well. The device can now be purchased for US$35 (25 EUR) on initial 24-month contract, and after a US$30 (22 EUR) discount when ordering online.

In addition, the carrier offers a 2-year device warranty for the Torch 9810, as well as the option to return it within 14 days from delivery if the customer is not satisfied with the purchase.

The mobile phone is built on the popularity of the original Torch 9800 and features the same slider form factor, but offers improved hardware and software configurations.

In this regard, the Torch 9810 is equipped with a superior 1.2 GHz single core processor and packs 8 GB onboard memory, 768 MB of RAM and microSD card slot for memory expansion (up to 32GB).

The BlackBerry Torch 9810 is now much faster in comparison with its predecessor, due to the high performance hardware and the new BlackBerry 7 operating system.

RIM’s new mobile platform comes with the fastest Internet mobile browser ever embedded into a BlackBerry device an enhanced multimedia features.

Aside the traditional portrait QWERTY keyboard, the Torch 9810 sports a 3.2-inch capacitive touchscreen with support for 16 million colors and 480 x 640 pixels resolution.

There’s also a 5-megapixel photo snapper on the back, which features autofocus, LED flash and HD (720p) video recording capabilities.

We are excited to introduce the new BlackBerry Torch 9810 in the South African market. We believe that customers in South Africa will be thrilled by the faster performance, enhanced browsing and richer multimedia delivered by this powerful new BlackBerry 7 smartphone,” said Rui Brites, director of product management for Africa at RIM.
