Last year, Canadian mobile phone maker Research In Motion went official with its first tablet PC, the BlackBerry PlayBook, which is still unavailable on the market, but which should come with a rather surprising feature, namely support for Android apps.

Following a series of rumors on the possible inclusion of this feature with RIM's tablet PC, some confirmation on the matter came from a RIM representative, which makes things as good as confirmed.

During the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, a representative from Research In Motion mentioned during a demonstration of the BlackBerry PlayBook that support for Android applications should arrive at a certain point in the future.

A video to prove that is also available for your viewing pleasure, embedded at the bottom of this article (via CrackBerry).

While this is not an official statement from the handset vendor, you can hear the mentioning at the 14-second mark in the video below.

Most probably, RIM would make a formal announcement in the not-too-distant future, and it would also provide some more info on the matter.

In the meantime, we should note that, only several days ago, Android developers ShopSavvy pointed at the fact that some BlackBerry devices can run Android applications.

They mentioned three of the RIM's smartphones as being capable to run such applications, which means that RIM might actually announce this feature for more of its devices.

However, the PlayBook is the only one that got closest to a confirmation on this, and we should wait for an official announcement to be made before we can say for sure that Android apps can run on BlackBerry devices.

This is not something that you hear every day, that's for sure, but it does sound like a great option for those who will purchase the tablet PC, since they would enjoy expanded access to mobile applications for their devices.
