The company intends no further major PlayBook updates

Earlier today I told you the BlackBerry PlayBook tablet received a minor update in the form of OS version 2.1.0.1917, rekindling hopes that the company hasn't forgotten about the tablet and is still actively working to improve it.

I hate being the bearer of bad news, but this appears to be the last update for the BlackBerry PlayBook OS 2.x variation.

According to the official BlackBerry “Software Support Life Cycle” site, PlayBook OS 2.0.x and 2.1.x are scheduled for End of Life (EOL) in April 2014.

Some of you might remember that the past BlackBerry PlayBook OS 1.0.x went EOL on December 2013. BlackBerry terminating support for the build means the tablet will be left to slowly die?

On the other hand, there have been reports suggesting BlackBerry will bring the BlackBerry 10 to the tablet, but the company remains silent on the matter, so take the info with a grain of salt.

On the other hand, rumors of BlackBerry working on a tablet have been running loose online for some time now. In a recent interview, VP of Global Product Management at BlackBerry, Francois Maheiu, admitted the company was considering building another tablet.

The specifics weren't given, as they have nothing concrete yet, but a new PlayBook is definitely in the cards. And now that support is ending for OS 2.0.x and 2.1.x on the original PlayBook, will we see it arrive sooner rather than later?
