Taiwan, South-Asian island with the 23-million people, will soon be getting the BlackBerry Pearl 8120, RIM's latest smartphone from the Pearl series. The device will apparently be launched by Taiwan Mobile (also known as TWM), the second largest mobile operator
in the country.
According to DigiTimes, a Taiwan-based online publication, the Pearl 8120 will be available starting with June. Although the publication mentions a "8020" smartphone, no RIM device with this name exists, so that's obviously a typo and they're actually talking about the BlackBerry 8120.
Together with the 8110 model, the 8120 was created by RIM to replace the Pearl 8100, which is more than two years old. Although its design is similar to the one of the old 8100, BlackBerry Pearl 8120 brings more advanced features and is more prepared to answer the needs of business users. Customers will get Wi-Fi, quad-band GSM connectivity, a 240 x 260 pixels display with support for up to 65K colors, a QWERTY keypad for easy text input, document viewer, BlackBerry maps, full HTML browser, email, Instant Messaging, stereo Bluetooth, Music and Video players, a 3.5mm audio jack, a 2 Megapixel camera with flash and video recording, USB, organizer, To Do list, handsfree and microSD card support. At 91 grams and 107 x 50 x 14 millimeters, BlackBerry Pearl 8120 packs a 900 mAh battery that should last up to 4 hours in talk-time mode and up to 360 hours in stand-by mode.
The price of Pearl 8120 for the Taiwanese market is not yet known. However, we do know the smartphone's retail price in the countries where it's already available (the US or Canada) - around $400 -, so users from Taiwan should expect a similar price. 400 USD means about 12,180 Taiwanese dollars, but with the signing of a contract with TWM for one or more years, customers will be able to get the new Pearl for less.
