Previous BlackBerry smartphones were using another technology

As we’re getting closer to BlackBerry Passport’s launch date, more details on the upcoming smartphone pop up online. We’ve also got some live pictures showing the smartphone in comparison with other devices, but the latest leak is focusing on display-related features.

For those who are not BlackBerry fans or simply don’t know, the Canadian company does not use Corning Gorilla Glass for its displays, instead it makes use of a certain technology which is called Touch on Lens.

Touch on Lens allows Blackberry to apply the touch technology on the back side of the cover glass, which basically removes the need for a separate touch panel. Apparently, this is one of the reasons BlackBerry phones are slimmer than they should be.

Well, it looks like BlackBerry has taken another approach in regard to Passport’s display. N4BB reports that they have been given the full spec sheet for the BlackBerry Passport, which confirms that the smartphone will use Corning Gorilla Glass 3 for extra protection.

The phone’s display has 4.5 inches in size and supports 1440 x 1440 pixels resolution, as well as 453 dpi (dots per inch). It’s unclear whether or not Corning Gorilla Glass will be the usual protection glass for the upcoming BlackBerry smartphones, but it’s certain that Passport is going to use it.

Given the fact the Passport is not even official yet, it would be too early to assume anything regarding BlackBerry’s decision to use Corning Gorilla Glass 3 instead of Touch on Len technology. Anyway, this doesn’t seem like a bad thing at all, so there you have it, BlackBerry fans.
