Canadian mobile phone maker BlackBerry has officially confirmed plans to make the BlackBerry OS 10.2.1 upgrade available for download starting with January 28.

The company has demoed the new platform version in Malaysia yesterday, and N4BB reports that it has also confirmed via email that the official rollout of the update will kick off next week.

The aforementioned email also unveiled that users in Australia owning a BlackBerry Z10, Q10, or Q5 smartphone would be able to grab the new OS version starting with January 29, the news site notes.

The upcoming operating system version will bring along a great deal of enhancements when compared to the currently available variant.

Some of these include the option to customize Pinch gesture to filter BlackBerry Hub, along with a simplified phone experience.

Moreover, the update comes with SMS and Email Groups, as well as with actionable lockscreen notifications, and with Picture Password, which should enable fast unlocking.

Before you get too excited about the pending deployment of BlackBerry OS 10.2.1, you should also know that the platform release is subject to carrier approvals.

Apparently, the Canadian handset vendor is aiming at rolling out the new software in one sweeping global launch, but the company still needs to receive approvals from operators for the new build.

Given that January 28 has already been set in stone as the release date for the OS, it means that carriers have already received the software, and that they are currently testing it.

However, it also means that there is a possibility that not all wireless services providers will approve the build, and that some users might have to wait a bit longer for it to start arriving on their devices.

One way or the other, BlackBerry should provide some specific info on its plans for the release in the not too distant future, so stay tuned to learn the news.
