Canadian company BlackBerry has just announced that the global rollout of its Leap smartphone will begin this week. The first country to get it will be United Kingdom, where the smartphone is already available for pre-order.

However, BlackBerry Leap will be available in other countries as well, including Germany, France, United States, Canada, United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia and India. Additional countries will be announced later on.

Depending on the region, the price of the BlackBerry Leap may vary. Although the Canadian company has announced that the smartphone will be available for around $275, in the UK the smartphone costs the equivalent of around $295.

The smartphone will come with BlackBerry 10.3.1 operating system right out of the box. It also comes pre-loaded with BlackBerry Blen, BBM (BlackBerry Messenger), BlackBerry World, Amazon Appstore for Android apps, as well as BlackBerry Assistant.

A rather obsolete chipset, but decent amount of memory

Hardware-wise, BlackBerry Leap is a decent mid-range smartphone. It comes packed with a dual-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Plus processor clocked at 1.5GHz, an Adreno 305 graphics processing unit, and 2GB of RAM.

The smartphone has 16GB of internal memory, but users can further expand storage up to 128GB via a microSD card slot.

On the back, BlackBerry Leap features an 8-megapixel camera with autofocus, LED flash, and full HD (1080p) video recording, while on the front there's a secondary 2-megapixel camera for video calls.

The Leap sports a 5-inch capacitive touchscreen display that supports HD (720p) resolution. Other highlights of the smartphone include a 2,800 mAh non-removable battery, 4G LTE support, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0, microUSB 2.0, GPS with AGPS, and FM Radio.

“With an all-touch screen, the BlackBerry Leap rounds out our portfolio of BlackBerry 10 devices, offering an affordable choice to mobile professionals who require a smartphone that safeguards sensitive communications and keeps them productive,” said Ron Louks, President, Devices and Emerging Solutions at BlackBerry.
