New smartphone from RIM

The Canadians from Research In Motion have been doing great lately, especially after announcing the BlackBerry Bold 9000 smartphone, which is, as everyone agrees, the best-looking handset from the company. Even more, Bold is also the BlackBerry that packs the most advanced features and this obviously makes it the most expensive too.

RIM seems to really like the Bold concept, as another new handset with a similar look has recently appeared: BlackBerry Javelin. The smartphone is said to pack about the same features as the ones included in the 9000, with the main difference that the Javelin does not have 3G connectivity and only works on GSM networks (with EDGE). This move from the Ontario-based manufacturer is probably aimed at offering the goodies of Bold for users who only use 2G networks with EDGE.

Probably the best thing about Javelin is that it has a wider display than the one of Bold 9000, counting 480 x 360 pixels. Its other features include a 3.2 Megapixel camera with flash and video, Wi-Fi, internal GPS, BlackBerry maps, the latest BlackBerry OS, full HTML browser, email, Music and Video players, Bluetooth 2.0 with A2DP, a powerful processor and, probably, an internal memory of at least 1GB (expandable with a microSD card). BlackBerry Javelin has about the same size as the Bold and it features a similar full QWERTY keypad, good for quick and easy text input.

With Javelin, Bold and the unconfirmed yet Kickstart clamshell and Thunder touchscreen smartphones, RIM seems to be revitalizing its line-up of devices, which, until now, consisted of handsets that did not bring anything spectacular when it comes to design.

Until official details about the Javelin emerge, here is a short video preview with a prototype of the new smartphone:
