A recent report published by IDC shows that during the second quarter of the ongoing year Research In Motion's BlackBerry Curve handsets managed to occupy the first position in the top ten U.S. best-selling smartphones. The Canadian mobile phone maker should be quite proud of its devices, as they also occupied the third, fifth and sixth places in the top. The new hot Apple iPhone 3GS handset climbed all the way up to the second place, while the 3G flavor of the device finished the quarter on the fourth position.

Starting from the bottom, the top shows the HTC Touch Diamond on the number ten spot, right behind another HTC device, the Touch Pro. The eighth position has been filled by Palm's newly launched Pre smartphone, while the Android-based T-Mobile G1 comes in seventh. The sixth and fifth positions went to RIM's BlackBerry Storm and Bold, respectively. The iPhone 3G is placed fourth, dethroned by RIM's BlackBerry Pearl (only the 8110, 8120 and 8130 flavors), which made it to the top three list.

Apple's iPhone 3GS, including both 16GB and 32GB models, finished second, yet we should consider here the fact that it came to the market only about ten days before the quarter came to an end, so its performance is impressive. The first place, as mentioned above, goes to the BlackBerry Curve, 8310, 8320, 8330, 8350i and 8900 versions included. The handsets are available through all major carriers in the country, as well as via some prepaid ones, which helped them a lot, it seems.

According to fiercewireless, IDC's Ramon Llamas comments, “In a market where distribution is key to shipment volume success, Research In Motion's Curve finds itself available at all the major carriers as well as regional and prepaid operators. As a result, Research In Motion's BlackBerry Curve, in all of its versions, led all smartphones in the United States during the second quarter of 2009. By itself, the Curve offers a hard Qwerty keyboard, navigational trackball and a big screen, and different versions offer WiFi, GPS, or, in the case of the 8900, both.”
