The owners of a BlackBerry Curve 9360 smartphone on the airwaves of Australian wireless carrier Vodafone can now download and install on their devices a new version of the BlackBerry OS.

It is the same BlackBerry 7.1 platform release that Research In Motion has been pushing to its newer devices for a while now.

Recently, the software update became available for download for the owners of Bold 9900 smartphones on Vodafone Australia’s airwaves, and is now available for the Curve 9360 users as well.

“From today, March 23rd 2012 – a software update to the BlackBerry Curve 9360 handheld has been made available for download,” the wireless carrier announced.

The new OS release provides users with the possibility to take advantage of WiFi Hotspot functionality on their devices, the carrier announced.

Moreover, the new platform version will deliver features such as BlackBerry Tag – NFC Sharing, and Wireless Media Server – Share media content wirelessly.

But there’s more to it, as the new platform update also arrives on devices with a variety of performance enhancements that affect the handset’s social networking capabilities, and other functions more.

These improvements arrive in areas such as Facebook, Twitter, BlackBerry Music, Camera, HD Video Playback, Browser, PIM, and BlackBerry Maps.

Before starting the update process, users should make sure that their devices have been fully charged, and that all personal settings and files on them have been backed up. For that, they can use the BlackBerry Desktop Manager.

The same application should be used for upgrading the mobile phone. The needed file is available on the BlackBerry Software Download Portal.

To update, users will simply have to connect the device to their computers, fire up the BlackBerry Desktop Manager, and then simply follow the instructions.

Following the update, BlackBerry Curve 9360 will feature BlackBerry App Version 7.1.0.258 and Baseband Version 9.6.0.39. The update weighs 220MB.
