Struggling company pulls out the Apple-needs-to-innovate card

Apple makes more cash per quarter than BlackBerry’s entire market valuation, but that’s not stopping Thorsten Heins from calling iOS old news. In fact, he thinks BB’s new mobile OS has a fighting chance in the duopoly created by Apple and Samsung.

Speaking to the Australian Financial Review, Heins said, “History repeats itself again I guess … the rate of innovation is so high in our industry that if you don’t innovate at that speed you can be replaced pretty quickly. The user interface on the iPhone, with all due respect for what this invention was all about is now five years old.”

Yes, it’s exactly five years and two months old, actually. And it’s doing great. Why fix something if it’s not broken?

The answer again comes from Mr. Heins, who added, “The point is that you can never stand still. It is true for us as well. Launching BB10 just put us on the starting grid of the wider mobile computing grand prix, and now we need to win it,” Mr Heins said.

I don’t know where these people get the idea that Apple is standing still. The Cupertino giant has iterated in 2012 as much as all its rivals combined, and it’s got the quarterly earnings to show it too.

I sincerely hope BlackBerry makes a great comeback with BB10 so it can get a taste of some really stiff competition with Apple and Samsung covering every base before others can even sneeze in the right direction.

After massive blows incurred mainly as a result of the iPhone's staggering success, Mr. Heins needs to take notes, not give lessons.

Not that Apple’s Jonathan Ive couldn’t work some of his magic to give iOS a much deserved facelift. iOS 7 will soon be here. Then we’ll see what’s what.
