There are many BlackBerry fans who purchased one of the latest BlackBerry 7 smartphones unveiled by Research In Motion (RIM) last year, namely the Bold 9900. Some of them experience problems with the phone, which renders the device unusable for phone calls.
If you are one of those who have bought a BlackBerry Bold 9900 and noticed that your phone has suddenly went “silent,” then you might want to read ahead for the solution to this problem.
Apparently, the BlackBerry Bold 9900 likes to go “quiet” even if the profile is set to “Normal” or “Loud.” Basically, you won’t be able to hear your phone ring, and certainly you won’t be able to hear anyone talking when someone calls you or when you call someone.
Usually, when something like this happens and restarting the device doesn’t fix it, BlackBerry users simply pull out the battery, then put it back in, and switch on the smartphone. This will certainly fix the issue, but only temporarily.
The “no sound” issue only affects some BlackBerry Bold 9900 users, which means this is not a general problem. Those who replaced their units got rid of the issue, at least for a time if not forever.
Well, it appears that this is not a hardware issue after all. The folks over at CrackBerry solved the puzzle and offered a simple solution to this problem. Simply uninstall a third party application called “One Touch Flashlight” and the problem will be fixed.
There’s also another application that might screw your BlackBerry Bold 9900, "Flashlight: 2 for 1" that can be downloaded for free via App World.
It seems that after running one of these apps you will lose all sound and notifications vibration. The applications activate the video recorder to have the led on and screws the phone’s sound entirely.
However, it appears that both applications have been updated with bug fixes, so if you still want to give them a try make sure you download the newest versions.

| Comment #5 by: RoxyC on 01 Feb 2012, 17:50 UTC | reply to this comment | I had the Flashlight: 2 for 1 Free vers. 1.1.4.1 and I just deleted it and rebooted. Never know when the audio problem (can't transmit) will happen but it has been 2 days in a row. I figured out that I can test my capability to transmit or be heard (before making a call) by using the Voice Dialing feature first. So which flashlight is okay to use? |

| Comment #9 by: Marvin on 15 Mar 2012, 13:03 UTC | reply to this comment | I had the same "silence" problem in my BB 9900. I removed the flashlight app, removed the battery and restarted it and the sound came back. However, 5 days later the BB 9900 went silent again. The sound came back after removing the battery and restarting it. My concern is that I do not know when it will go silent again and how many reboots it will survive? |
| Comment #10 by: akaNeo on 03 May 2012, 07:57 UTC | reply to this comment | Yeaaah, It works on my blackberry bold 9790.
Well, my speaker not completely went quite. Meaning: It only sounded quite when it related with ringtone used for my profile. My speaker works fine, when it played with media player. So, it must be software problem, not hardware problem. Then, I came across this site, and uninstall the apps. mention above (I dont really need it anyway). Voila! Works like a charm! Thx for sharing, U made my day.... GBU :) |
| Comment #11 by: tushar7876 on 25 May 2012, 11:18 UTC | reply to this comment | First of all excuse me for my English. My device (bold 9900) is updated to latest firmware update. But i am still facing the same problem i was hoping to resolved . No sound issue is still there and its being mute more often than before. I have not installed both the software which are mentioned as cause of problem. Actually when this problem occurring you can not listen, process any song actually you can hardly process any media from the device. This kind of problem is making this device untrustworthy. Please help if any one finds any solution for the problem. Thanks |

| Comment #16 by: bberry9930 on 03 Jun 2012, 14:53 UTC | reply to this comment | I have been having the exact same problem with my 9930 and it only happens after I have connected to a bluetooth audio device. I do not have and never had the flashlight softwares installed. I can alleviate the problem by not enabling bluetooth connections. This is a seriously annoying software bug, and in our comapny at this time we are looking at moving away from blackberry product all together given poor support, and waining competitiveness for business use. |
| Comment #16.1 by: mwong on 05 Jun 2012, 00:15 GMT | I echo your sentiments. I have a BB 9930 and my audio "disappeared" today. It happened after I auto-connected to my car bluetooth, but not immediately afterwards. I made and received several calls before the audio went dead. This is a serious problem and may be yet another nail into the BB coffin. |

RIM needs to fix and support this.
