The company lost 3 million subscribers in the timeframe

Today, Canadian mobile phone maker BlackBerry announced its financial results for the fourth quarter of fiscal year 2013, and unveiled BlackBerry Z10 sales of one million in the timeframe.

The figure falls in line with previous estimates, though the overall number of six million BlackBerry devices sold in the three months falls short of analyst expectations.

Even so, sales of BlackBerry 10 devices appear to be encouraging, especially since only the BlackBerry Z10 smartphone has been available until now, and only in a small number of countries.

However, the company should see an increase in sales soon, especially with the Z10 launched in the United States this month, and with BlackBerry Q10 expected to arrive on the market in the not too distant future.

For the fourth quarter of fiscal year 2013, BlackBerry also unveiled revenue of $2.7 billion, down 2% from the previous quarter, but down 36% when compared to the same timeframe a year ago.

The handset vendor announced operating profit of $94 million for the timeframe, up from only $14 million in the previous quarter, as unveiled in this post on ADVFN.

However, the company did lose around three million subscribers in the three-month period ending March 2, when it enjoyed a customer base of only 76 million worldwide.

“We have implemented numerous changes at BlackBerry over the past year and those changes have resulted in the Company returning to profitability in the fourth quarter,” Thorsten Heins, president and CEO, commented.

“With the launch of BlackBerry 10, we have introduced the newest and what we believe to be the most innovative mobile computing platform in the market today. Customers love the device and the user experience, and our teams and partners are now focused on getting those devices into the hands of BlackBerry consumer and enterprise customers.”

Heins also claims that developers and partners like the new BlackBerry 10 platform, and that many are committed to helping it grow.
