Canadian mobile phone maker Research In Motion launched during summer a new flavor of its mobile operating system, namely the BlackBerry 6 OS, complemented by a new device, the BlackBerry Torch 9800, and now the company has showcased the platform on older devices, including the Bold 9700 or the Pearl 3G.

Of course, the handset vendor did announce that older devices would receive their share of BlackBerry 6 to offer more features to their users, but no specific release date for a software update was made official as of now.

The said Bold 9700 and Pearl 3G come to the market without a touchscreen display, something that is not missing from Torch's hardware specs, but they still go along pretty well with the new OS flavor.

However, it seems that they are a little slow when running under BlackBerry 6, and that they would certainly need some hardware refresh to be able to handle the new OS iteration properly.

According to a recent article on Engadget, which brought to light the two videos embedded below, both devices would need some CPU speed bump, along with a little more RAM to deliver optimal performance levels when running under BlackBerry 6.

For what it's worth, this “issue” might be solved in the near future, at least when it comes to the Bold model, as successor for it was already said to be on its way to the market.

The Bold 9700 smartphone should soon be replaced with a long-rumored Bold 9780, which sports a faster processor and better hardware specs, aimed at enhancing the experience it can deliver to users.

No official info on when things might become official has emerged for the time being, or on when the older devices would receive an OS update, but chances are that RIM would make announcements in the near future.

In the meantime, take a look at the videos below to learn more on this, or head over to Engadget to access a photo gallery with Bold 9700 and Pearl 3G running under BlackBerry 6.
