“Iron Man 2” has just opened in select theaters around the world, but talk of a spinoff is already starting to pick up speed. Though nothing is confirmed right now, word in the industry has it that a new film will be made around Scarlett Johansson’s character, Black Widow, and that the actress might actually resume her part in it, as SlashFilm informs.

This wouldn’t be the first time that a successful franchise spawns a spinoff or two – and, by all counts, the “Iron Man” franchise is a smashing hit, so it would warrant its own. However, some fans say on dedicated forums, giving a spinoff to a character – and an actress – who still has a lot to prove to fans might be somewhat of a rash decision on behalf of the studio, even if it might turn out to be a commercially viable decision.

“There wasn’t much news that came out of the Iron Man 2 press conference today regarding the future of the Marvel movie universe. But one of the interesting bits was Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige in response to the question of if Scarlett Johansson’s character Natasha Romanoff aka Black Widow would be getting her own big screen movie spin-off: ‘Definitely possible,’ said Feige. ‘Yes, absolutely’,” SlashFilm writes.

“As you know, Johansson’s character debuts in Iron Man 2. But why make a Black Widow movie? Most fans were not happy when Johansson got cast in the role, over Emily Blunt, who was forced to drop out due to contractual scheduling conflicts. She might seem like the least interesting character in the trailers, but many people who have seen the film have been saying that she is one of the biggest surprises of the sequel,” the same movie-oriented publication says of the newly introduced character.

Also new to the “Iron Man” franchise is Mickey Rourke, arguably the actor with the most remarkable comeback to the spotlight in years, thanks to the 2008’s critical and commercial hit “The Wrestler.” In the second film, he plays Russian conman out for a vengeance Ivan Vanko.
