Conservationists say transporting rhinos by helicopter is safer than by lorry

Not long ago, the western black rhino, i.e. a subspecies of the black rhino, was officially declared extinct. This piece of news made conservationists working with the World Wildlife Fund go into overdrive, and rush to transport rhinos that they believed to be threatened by poachers to safety.

The black rhino pictured above is one of the ten that were recently moved from their home in South Africa’s KwaZulu-Natal region to an area where conservationists say they will get to meet quite a lot of ladies or gentlemen, and hopefully produce many offspring.

As surprising as this may sound, it appears that it is much safer to transport rhinos by helicopter rather than by lorry.

According to Daily Mail, this is because it takes less time to reach the destination and therefore the animal does not have to spend loads of time under anesthetic.

“This new procedure has proved to be a safer bet. As a vet, this is my method of choice because it is quick and harmless to the rhinos, which is always our main concern in these operations,” says Dr. Jacques Flamand.

By the looks of it, the rhino did not mind being flown around by a bunch of two-legged creatures, and started eating soon after settling in its new home. Here's hoping the time for romance will soon come.
