Call of Duty: Black Ops Will Not Shy Away From The Brutality of War

Black Ops has not seen yet the controversy that Modern Warfare 2 experienced before launch with the infamous No Russian level or, more recently, that Medal of Honor has because of misguided politicians. Treyarch has stated, however, that it will not shy away from the brutality of war if it has any bearing with the story.

Speaking to GamerZines, Josh Olin, community manager at Treyarch, said that, “Controversial is such a subjective term. It's tough to say. It is a mature themed game for mature audiences and we're not shying away from the brutality or grittiness of war.

“Capturing that level of authenticity and realism is important in trying to immerse the players. Anything we do will be to propel the story or illicit an emotional response from the player, to make them feel angry or righteous or sad.

“Those are all elements that help immerse the player that much more deeply into the world. Nothing that we'll do will be gratuitous.”

Not many details have been revealed about the exact actions the player will be taking during the title's single player campaign, but it is known that all missions will have the back drop of recent conflicts like the Vietnam War or the Cold War.

The sensitive subject matter of these types of first person shooters has been under quite strict scrutiny by the media. Unfortunately, non-gamer journalists have rarely been able to produce an adequate account of the issues these games face and opted to present the story in a sensationalist manner.

This has, of course, back-fired for those who want this type of pastime banned, as for all the negative media attention it has attracted with the No Russian level, Modern Warfare 2 managed to achieve one of the biggest launches in the history of entertainment.

Modern Warfare 2 hit the tabloids in its run up to release last year for its controversial 'No Russian' level, which saw players kill civilians and police in a Russian airport.

Call of Duty: Black Ops will be released on the 9th of November for the Xbox 360, the PlayStation 3, the PC, the Nintendo Wii and the Nintendo DS.
