“Black Mass,” the story of the infamous Boston gangster Whitey Bulger who turned FBI informant and helped to bring down several mob bosses, is finally making its way to the big screen. Starring Johnny Depp as lead and directed by Scott Cooper, the film will be out in theaters this fall.

It just got its first trailer, and holly molly, does it look good! If you’re a fan of gangster dramas, you might want to make a mental note for this one because it shows a lot of promise.

Depp plays Bulger, but if that’s not enough to sell you on this film, you should consider the stellar cast as well. It includes Benedict Cumberbatch, Joel Edgerton, Kevin Bacon, Peter Sarsgaard, Rory Cochrane, Sienna Miller, Dakota Johnson, Juno Temple and Adam Scott.

It’s directed by Scott Cooper (“Crazy Heart”) and seems riddled with action scenes, tension and plot twists.

More importantly, - and I say that as a loving fan of the “old” Johnny Depp (i.e. the Depp before the second “Pirates of the Caribbean” film) - “Black Mass” promises to showcase his acting range, instead of having him hide behind makeup and on-camera gimmicks.

True, he’s still hidden behind his many layers of makeup and face prosthetics, but he’s not letting them define the character: it’s Depp who makes Bulger as threatening and lethal as he looks in this preview. Check it out.
