After having announced the release of the Black Lab Linux Enterprise Desktop 6 SR4 and Black Lab Linux Educational Desktop 6 SR4, Black Lab Software has had the great pleasure of informing us about the availability of Black Lab Linux Forensic Desktop 6 SR4 (Service Release 4).

The new release of Black Lab Linux Forensic Desktop 6 is based on the current long-term support version of the world's most popular free operating system, Ubuntu 14.04 LTS (Trusty Tahr), and it is powered by Linux kernel 3.16.0-38, which received several patches for extra hardware support.

Ubuntu's Linux kernel 3.13.0-53, which is the default kernel included with Ubuntu 14.04 LTS, is also available in the Black Lab Linux Forensic Desktop 6 SR4 distribution. Also, all included packages have been synchronized with Debian GNU/Linux 8.0 (Jessie), and all security updates that have been released until May 25, 2015 have been added.

"Black Lab Forensic Desktop 6 is also built for the cloud and with many law enforcement and security facilities relying on many cloud based applications it can run all of your cloud based applications like Microsoft Office 365, Google Apps, Oracle Web Apps etc.," says Robert Dohnert on behalf of the Black Lab Software.

KDE4 and MATE 1.8 desktop environments are included

The fourth service release of Black Lab Linux Forensic Desktop 6 comes with KDE 4.14.2 as the default desktop environment, but MATE 1.8.2 is also included for those who are migrating from an enterprise distribution that uses a similar user interface, such as Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.

As one might expect, several applications and core components have been updated to their latest version available. Among the most popular ones, we can mention Mozilla Firefox 38.0, Mozilla Thunderbird 31.7, Skype 4.3, LibreOffice 4.3, as well as GCC (GNU Compiler Collection 4.9.2).

Among the forensics tools and other useful utilities that have been included in Black Lab Linux Forensic Desktop 6, we can mention Nmap, Xplico, SIFT Workstation, ScudCloud, Citrix Receiver, Dia, LibreCAD, and Timeshift.
