14 DAY TRIAL // Black Lab Linux, a distribution that is based on Ubuntu 14.04 LTS and is using the Xfce desktop environment, has been upgraded to version 6.0 SR 1.1 and is now available for download.
The Black Lab Linux distros are traditionally known for their GNOME desktops, but the developers have a few other flavors in the making and the Xfce is definitely the most interesting of the bunch. It provides a simple and clear desktop for users who want a more classic experience, but it's customized to look and feel like a Black Lab OS.
The Xfce flavor doesn't get as much attention as its GNOME brethren do, but it's just as good and the developers are making sure that it's properly updated and supported. This latest version release is not a particularly big upgrade, but it does feature some interesting changes.
Black Lab Linux Xfce 6.0 SR 1.1 is not a regular Xfce experience
The fact that this distro has adopted Xfce doesn't mean that it's actually the same kind of desktop you've already seen in a million other places. It's modified to fit this OS and it's actually very well put together. It's at the bottom of the screen and feels familiar, especially since Xfce is a light solution addressing people with low-end or old hardware.
"Today we are announcing the re-release of Black Lab Linux XFCE. We had originally planned to redo the XFCE release and release it branded as Yellow Lab Linux. Some of our users have expressed to us that it was sort of confusing and we decided we wanted to preserve our brand. So with that we are releasing Black Lab Linux XFCE 6.0 SR1.1," noted the developers on their website.
Other important changes include the update for the Xfce 4.11.4 desktop, the addition of Firefox 35, a new font manager, Black Lab Visual Subsystem 8 , and Linux Kernel 3.13.44.
