Roberto J. Dohnert, lead developer and project lead of Black Lab Linux, had the pleasure of announcing Softpedia earlier today, February 16, about the immediate availability for download of the Black Lab Linux MATE computer operating system, based on Ubuntu Linux and the MATE desktop environment.

The MATE edition of Black Lab Linux is powered by Linux kernel 3.13.0, which is also used on the Ubuntu 14.04 LTS (Trusty Tahr) operating system, from which Black Lab Linux is derived. The version of MATE used in the distribution is 1.8.1, a release that supports both GTK+ 2 and GTK+ 3 applications.

Includes LibreOffice 4.4, Mozilla Firefox 35, and Steam for Linux

Talking about applications, Black Lab Linux MATE comes pre-installed with numerous open-source software projects, among which we can mention Mozilla Firefox 35, Mozilla Thunderbird 32, Steam for Linux client, LibreOffice 4.4, GIMP, Pidgin, VLC Media Player, OpenShot, Scribus, as well as the modern App Grid app store that allows users to install additional package from the official Ubuntu software repositories in style.

“Requested by users and answered by the Black Lab Linux team. We are proud to welcome the Mate desktop environment to the Black Lab Linux family. Built on the same technologies that have made Black Lab Linux one of the fastest growing Linux distributions on the planet we have provided an official release statement,” said Roberto J. Dohnert exclusively for Softpedia.

It's on par with the Xfce edition of Black Lab Linux

As expected, we’ve prepared an in-depth screenshot tour of the brand-new Black Lab Linux MATE operating system, which includes all the security updates released as of February 14, 2015 for the Ubuntu Linux distribution. When compared with the Xfce edition of Black Lab Linux, it was discovered that the MATE flavor uses the same amount of RAM (system memory), approximately 300MB on initial boot.

You can download Black Lab Linux MATE 6.0 SR1 today, either from Softpedia or from the product’s website. A Q&A with Roberto J. Dohnert can be found on the official release announcement of the distribution. Do not hesitate to drop a comment below if you like the distribution.
