The Black Lab Software team, through Roberto J. Dohnert, had the pleasure of announcing earlier today, March 24, the immediate availability for download of all four editions of Black Lab Linux 6.5, which includes Xfce 4.12, KDE 4.14.2, MATE 1.8.1, and GNOME 3.10.2 desktop environments.

Black Lab Linux 6.5 incorporates two different kernel packages, Linux kernel 3.13 LTS and Linux kernel 3.16.0-31, with the latter being used by default when booting the operating system from the Live DVD or after installation. The LTS (Long Term Support) kernel is there for users who have hardware components that aren’t recognized by the default Linux kernel package.

“With this release we continue to enhance and improve Black Lab Linux for public consumption,” says Roberto J. Dohnert. “While the base is the same, the Open Distribution Release comes in 4 flavors. GNOME, MATE, XFCE and KDE. The XFCE release is built into the GNOME release because of customer demand.”

The distribution comes with built-in support for the exFAT filesystem

Black Lab Linux 6.5 updates its pre-installed applications and core components to their latest versions available at the moment of the release announcement. For example, it comes with Mozilla Firefox 36.0, Mozilla Thunderbird 31.5.0, VLC Media Player 2.2.0, Google Chrome 41, Rhythmbox 3.1, as well as FFMpeg 2.6.

Another interesting feature of the new Black Lab Linux 6.5 release is that it brings native read and write support for Microsoft’s exFAT file system. In addition, UEFI (Unified Extensible Firmware Interface) Secure Boot support has been integrated into the distribution, which is only supported on 64-bit computer architectures (32-bit versions will be released in April).

You can download Black Lab Linux 6.5 Xfce/GNOME, Black Lab Linux 6.5 KDE, and Black Lab Linux 6.5 MATE operating systems right now from Softpedia. A complete list of pre-installed packages can be found on the official release announcement of the distribution. A Black Lab Linux Consumer Edition is available for purchase on the project’s website.
