Black Lab Education Desktop 6.0 Beta 2, a Linux distribution built for an education environment and based on the Black Lab Professional Desktop series, is now ready for testing and download.

Users of the Black Lab distro now have a new edition for test, the Education Desktop. As the version number indicates, this is not the first Beta made available and it's been more than a month since the first release. Things seem to progress just nicely and the devs have made a number of important changes, including for the desktop environment, but also the kernel.

Just like the regular Black Lab distro, this edition is also based on Ubuntu 12.04 LTS, so it comes with all the perks, including a support period until 2019. It also means that the operating system is quite stable and that it comes with an interesting suite of application that are made specifically for this purpose.

Interestingly enough, the devs are also saying that the security updates for it should be available until 2021, which is actually two years more than for Ubuntu 12.04 LTS.

Black Lab Education Desktop 6.0 Beta 2 brings some interesting changes

Despite the fact that it says Education Desktop, this is not a free operating system. The Beta can be downloaded by everyone, but the final release will come with different pricing, depending on the number of licenses purchased.

"The Black Lab Education Desktop 6 release focuses on the rock solid base of Ubuntu 14.04 LTS, which also includes functionality and feature support until 2019 and security and bug fix support until 2021 and we include an application lineup for education users that is untouched by any other education focused Linux distribution."

"We have worked very hard to be competitive on pricing and we follow trends on education spending, so the custom configuration  for education has changed.  So we have 1 and 2 seat licenses as well as custom configuration and unlimited licensing," reads the official announcement.

The developers have also explained that the default desktop environment used is GNOME 3.10.4, the Linux kernel has been updated to version 3.13.0-43, some parental controls have been implemented, Thunderbird has been upgraded to version 31.3, LibreOffice 4.3.4 is provided by default, the Tux suite of educational tools has been added, and even Kinect support is available.

More details about this release can be found in the official announcement. You can download Black Lab Education Desktop 6.0 Beta 2 right now from Softpedia.
