Apple offers gift cards for Mac, iPhone, and iPad purchases

As every year goes, Apple is the least bit interested in giving people actual Black Friday discounts on their products. Instead, the company will award every buyer with “a gift that gives back,” in the form of a (PRODUCT)RED gift card that yields a donation to the Global Fund to fight AIDS.

You might not think much of the company’s decision to combine today’s shopping event with (RED), but we’ll have you know that Apple alone has contributed to the fund $75 million / €60 million so far.

“Let’s make today more than the start of the shopping season. When you purchase select Apple products, you’ll receive a (PRODUCT)RED iTunes Gift Card to use toward anything at the iTunes Store. And we’ll automatically make a donation to the Global Fund to support the fight against AIDS,” Apple says on the newly set-up store page.

What’s in it for you

The first thing you’ll get is confirmation that your purchase will help fight AIDS in Africa. Secondly, you’ll get this nifty iTunes card painted red that has a specified amount of cash on it. You can spend that cash in the iTunes Store on apps, books, music, movies, and everything in between.

The prices are $100 (€80) for Macs, $50 (€40) for iPhone and iPad, and $25 (€20) for iPod touch, Apple TV, and Beats By Dr. Dre audio gear. A two-week promotion on apps is also available. (RED) apps are regularly priced as well, but a portion of the proceeds will be going to the Global Fund. There are 25 apps in total that support (RED), including Angry Birds, FIFA, Sims, CSR Racing, and other high-profile titles.

Inexpensive products like the iPod shuffle aren’t included in the promotion, but the iPod nano is. As far as Macs are concerned, all models are eligible, including iMac, Macbook Air, MacBook Pro, Mac Pro, and Mac mini.

Terms of service

Apple reveals in fine print on its web site that the promo applies only to “qualifying purchases” made today, November 28, 2014, at U.S. Apple Retail locations across the United States, as well as on the Apple Online Store.

Certain products are excluded, as noted above and “An iPhone purchased from the Apple Online Store for $0 on carrier contracts or carrier installment plans does not qualify,” the company clarifies. In other words, iPhone 5c isn’t included in the offer.

There are quantity limits, therefore the promotion will remain valid for as long as supplies last. Substitutions and rain checks are not allowed, Apple says, and the (RED) promotion can’t be combined with other promotions.
