The video speaks for itself, showing the incredible amount of freedom

The character creator in role-playing games used to be a little more than a place to input your name and select from some predetermined portraits, but thankfully, in the past couple of years, the customization options afforded to players have become quite extensive.

While some games that are a little bit older, such as World of Warcraft, the soon-to-be-10-year-old end-all be-all of MMORPGs, still offer a narrow selection of presets, other more modern games offer a slew of options and an incredible level of freedom when it comes to designing your in-game avatar.

Such is the case of Black Desert, a game that features probably the most detailed and powerful character creator to date, as can easily be gathered from the video below.

Black Desert is a massively multiplayer online role-playing game from Korea that features some gorgeous visuals, and not gorgeous in the sense that you can get a decent wallpaper from a screenshot, but gorgeous in the sense that its characters look so good that you'll be afraid not to ruin their hairdo when hitting them upside the head with your axe.

While the video is not very clear about its contents, whether this is a developer-only tool that allows them to create characters for cinematics or test various animations, or if this kind of freedom will actually be afforded to players, allowing them an unprecedented level of control over the look of their in-game avatars.

The editor seemingly allows players to change the shape and volume of individual sections of limbs, so if you want to make an avatar that resembles the female barbarian in Dragon's Crown, you can just go ahead and do so.

The faces are divided into small regions that you can individually alter, and you can even select weird looking star-shaped irises and just how curly you want your hair to be, apart from a wide range of wrinkles and other such age markers.

Black Desert is currently in closed beta testing on the PC, and rumors indicate that it might also make a jump to the PlayStation 4 sometime in the future. It is currently intended to launch in Korea, Japan and Russia, and developer Pearl Abyss is also reportedly working on an English version, but they haven't yet signed with any publishers, so it's going to be a while until we can get our hands on it.
