The scratch-n-sniff tickets are the brainchild of the New Hampshire state lottery, have “I Heart Bacon” written on them

Earlier this month, on January 5, the US' New Hampshire state lottery introduced people to some really bizarre tickets. No, what's odd about them is not the fact that they all offer seriously impressive cash prizes. It will be a cold day in hell before a lottery even considers coughing out such tickets.

Not to beat about the bush, the reason the New Hampshire state lottery's brand new tickets are now making headlines is that, when you scratch them, they begin to smell like bacon. Perfectly crispy and totally delicious bacon, to be more precise.

Possibly the weirdest lottery tickets ever

The odd scratch-n-sniff tickets now marketed by the New Hampshire state lottery each sell for just $1 (€0.86). The lottery promises that people can win up to $1,000 (€860), and that the odds to get the money invested in a ticket back are 1 in 4.12.

Still, it might be that many of the people buying these tickets don't feel quite as strongly about all the money they can win as they do about the divine bacon smell that floods and tickles their nostrils when they scratch them.

After all, the prizes the New Hampshire state lottery is ready and willing to offer are not for everybody, but only for a few really lucky guys and gals. The scent of bacon, however, is a gift anyone can get for themselves or their close ones in exchange for just one dollar bill.

“The Lottery is focused on developing new and fun ways to engage customers. The I Heart Bacon scratch ticket combines two things people love: the chance to win cash and the wonderful, enticing smell of bacon.”

“Every time players scratch an ‘I Heart Bacon’ ticket, they will think it is time for Saturday morning breakfast, and they might just scratch and sniff their way to $1,000!” said Charlie McIntyre, executive director of the New Hampshire Lottery Commission.

A weird marketing campaign to go with the even weirder tickets

Since no new lottery ticket release is complete without a marketing campaign to go with it, word has it that a so-called bacon truck is now cruising streets up and down New Hampshire and offering people free bacon samples and even ‘I Heart Bacon’ tickets.

Probably because everybody loves and adores bacon, this marketing campaign has turned out to be a roaring success. Thus, the New Hampshire state lottery says that, just last week, it sold about 700,000 of its enticing scratch-n-sniff tickets.
