Bitstream, the company behind the popular BOLT browser, has just announced the availability of the BOLT SDK, a suite of tools that enables developers to build feature rich Java mobile applications.

Launched at Mobile World Congress in February 2009, the BOLT mobile browser is one of the more advanced mobile browsers and one of fastest to feature HTML 5 support.

Bitstream has recently announced that its mobile browser has been installed more than 20 million times in over 200 countries around the world.

They say this was possible due to the WebKit-based cloud-computing architecture that enables all the browser's capabilities and makes it faster than other browsers.

Because of our expertise in rendering Web content on mobile devices, Bitstream was approached by developers trying to solve the problem of displaying dynamic Web content within an app without requiring the launch of an external browser, which takes the user outside of the app,” said Sampo Kaasila, vice president of research development at Bitstream.

To Bitstream the solution was simple: use the BOLT architecture from within the app. While there may be ways to embed Web content inside smartphone apps, no such capabilities natively exist for Java feature phones, and the BOLT SDK fills that gap.”

Thanks to the new BOLD SDK, the cloud-computing architecture is now available to developers, enterprises and service providers.

According to the developers, the BOLT SDK supports Web apps written in HTML5, JavaScript and other Web programming languages, and can deliver the same features that are used by BOLT browser.

The BOLT SDK is completely customizable and depending on the required application capabilities, can be configured in terms of package size and memory usage.

Bitstream will be demonstrating the BOLT cloud computing mobile browser and the BOLT SDK at CTIA WIRELESS in Orlando, Florida, March 22 to 24.
