14 DAY TRIAL // Bitdefender today announced a killer deal on its Virus Scanner Plus software for Mac OS X. Previously sold for $29.99 / €24.99, Virus Scanner Plus is now available as a free download from the Mac App Store.
To be clear on one thing, Virus Scanner Plus (as its name implies) basically just scans your system for malware but does little in the way of removing it from your Mac. However, its array of features and interface make it quite a user-friendly tool.

The app is said to keep your Mac and other people’s computers safe by not allowing you to pass on malware to others.

“If you download an infected file or get one in the mail your Mac will be protected and your friends' computers safe. Stay safe and keep other safe by not passing malware along.”
Virus Scanner Plus uses the Bitdefender antivirus engines, detects OS X and Windows viruses alike, updates to the latest version automatically if enabled, and includes a quick scan option which rapidly scans system areas that are most likely to be infected.
A deeper scanning option is also offered, and a custom scan module allows you to select specific areas (including standalone files) for scanning.
Virus Scanner Plus searches for malware even in archives, PDFs and PKG installers that are specific to the Mac. Its simple interface makes it possible for everyone to understand what they’re doing, which is particularly important when dealing with antivirus / malware scanning software.
It gives you straightforward security status and recommendations, quarantines dangerous files, and even the ability to drag-and-drop files and folders for instant scanning.
Weighing in at 168 MB, Virus Scanner Plus from the Mac App Store is localized in English only and requires at least OS X 10.7 (Lion) to run on your Mac. OS X Mountain Lion (10.8) and OS X Mavericks (10.9) are also supported, but BitDefender has yet to announce full compatibility with OS X Yosemite (10.10).
